Shanah-Shame: Bogosian Skates Free

Zach Bogosian delivered a leaping, illegal hit on Andreas Nodl during the second period in Sunday’s game against Winnipeg. Nodl had to be helped off the ice and did not return to the game. Further details on his condition are pending.

It appears no punishment, outside of his five-minute major and a game misconduct, will be delivered to the Jet’s Shanahan escape artist. You may recall his repercussion-free actions earlier this year on Pierre-Marc Bouchard and Cody Eakin.

His crime against Nodl is clear under Rule 42.1 Charging:

A minor or major penalty shall be imposed on a player who skates or jumps into, or charges an opponent in any manner.

Raffi Torres of Phoenix and Andy Sutton of Edmonton were suspended for this very infraction earlier this year. Yes, those players had previous suspensions, but Torres was forced to miss 3 games and Sutton missed 8 games for his dangerous hit on Alexei Ponikarovsky.

Jeff Skinner, with no prior offenses, just served a two game suspension for kicking. I do not disagree with the ruling, but there must be consistency.

Need another example of a similar hit getting the league’s attention? Here is Zac Rinaldo’s illegal charge on Jonathan Ericsson…
