Icing on the Cake: Jiri Tlusty

Carolina Hurricanes’ #19 was born today, March 16, in 1988. Jiri Tlusty was born in Slany, Czechoslovakia and grew up on his family farm. Tlusty was drafted first round by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2006 NHL entry draft. On July 14, 2006 the forward signed a 3 year contract with the Leafs.

His first NHL game was a memorable one on October 25, 2007. In addition to making his NHL debut, Tlusty claimed two goals against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The 2008-09 season was a monumental one for Jiri. Over 66 contests, he excelled with 25 goals and 41 assists for the Toronto Marlies. On January 15th, 2009, he was back with the Maple Leafs and snagged three helpers facing the Carolina Hurricanes. It was a career high point record for the center. About a month later, Tlusty would earn the record for most goals in a game set by one player in Marlies’ franchise history. He shot the puck five times which resulted in five tallies while playing the Syracuse Crunch.

On December 3, 2009 Jiri headed south as a result of a trade for Philippe Paradis to join the Carolina Hurricanes. He scored his first Canes goal just 8 days later.

The 2009-10 season was split between the Albany River Rats and Hurricanes. He had 6 goals and 9 assists over 20 contests with Albany and 6 points in 18 games with the Canes. The Czech native inked another Carolina contract on July 1, 2010 for one-way, one year deal.

Tlusty mostly remained at the NHL level for the 2010-11 season playing 57 games with the Canes. He had 12 points (6g, 6a) and 14 penalty minutes. History repeated itself on July 1, 2011 when he signed another one year contract with the Canes.

Mr. Jiri has also represented the Czech Republic in three international tournaments. He had 7points to help his team win bronze during the 2006 U-18 World Juniors.

Despite a recent injury, Tlusty has shown tremendous growth and maturity in his game this year. He has made his presence known, like with his 9 game point streak! He has 31 points in 68 games, a plus/minus rating +6, 18 penalty minutes, delivered 77 hits, one power play goal, and three game-winners. Not too shabby my friend, I think you are due for some crazy good birthday presents…

  • Since Sullivan’s is my favorite restaurant in the Triangle, I will have a duplication site built in Kladno, Czech so he can enjoy the kitchen during his off-season.
  • I’m also going to give him a small role in The Hangover 3 as he loves the original.
  • Instant recovery from his ailment and a hat trick against Minnesota on Saturday.
  • I grant Tlusty an ever-improving, healthy career. It is only up from here!

Don’t party too hard in honor of #19 tonight, because tomorrow is Derek Joslin’s birthday! Until then, check us out on Facebook at CardiacCane. Also, be sure to follow Cardiac Cane writers at: @CardiacCaneFS, @Esbee92, @peacelovepuck, @caniaccaz and @caniac176.
