Great Wall Of Goalie Theodore Blanks Canes In Florida 2-0

Unfortunately, there was not much to write home about from the east coast of Florida as the Carolina Hurricanes lost to the Florida Panthers Sunday in a 2-0 shoot out. The Canes weren’t exactly coming into Sunday’s game fresh, after playing a 7:00pm game against the Lightning on Saturday, losing an hour due to Daylight Savings, and then playing a 5:00pm game.

But of course the big factor of the game was Jose Theodore, the Great Wall of Goalie, swallowing or rejecting every single one of the Canes 34 shots.

The Eric Staal line was hampered by his illness and the upper body injury to Jiri Tlusty. While none of the Hurricanes lines were productive by scoring goals, Tuomo Ruutu continued to deliver hits in his second game back from injury. Jeff Skinner even got in on the action, delivering the “Teeth Rattling Check of the Game” to D-Man Keaton Ellerby.

The first period of the game was scoreless at the end of twenty minutes, however the Panthers out shot the Canes 14-5.

Tomas Fleischmann scored for the Panthers in the second period. The next Panthers goal would come late in the third period from Marcel Goc on an empty Carolina net. Cam Ward stopped 31 shots for the Canes.

Jaro Spacek left the game early with an undisclosed lower body injury. Anthony Stewart might be in Coach Kirk Muller’s doghouse as he has not had more than eight minutes of ice time in the last two games.

The Panthers have now won four games of the six game series against Carolina this season. The teams will meet two more times before years end, the next being in Raleigh on March 21.

Unfortunately, not much else to report in this match up. Jose Theodore stuffed those two points in his pocket like the Canes would have liked to stuff a few pucks in his net.

Next up for the Hurricanes are the New York Rangers, who snapped a three game losing streak Sunday night against the New York Islanders. This will be the fourth meeting between the Hurricanes and the Rangers this season. The Rangers have emerged victorious in the three previous match ups.
