The past few days have been filled with some very interesting headlines. The first one I would like to discuss is the Carolina Hurricanes will to win. I don’t know about you, but I feel like I am watching the birth of a new team. The Hurricanes have been able to skate away with points in 7 of their last 10 tries. Currently their last 10 games sit at 5-3-2. Last night the Canes were able to move into 12th place, now only 8 points behind Washington for the last playoff spot in the East.
Splashing into the headlines also was Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas. The Boston Bruins were invited to visit the White House on Monday to meet President Obama. Thomas refused the invite stating:
“I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People.
“This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct oppostition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers vision for the Federal government.
“Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL.
“This is the only public statement I will be making on this topic.”
I personally question his decision. I am not basing my opinion of his choice on political reasons. I have a problem with hockey being a team sport, and Thomas not backing the team loyalty.
Another story making headlines was the suspension of Alexander Ovechkin for 3 games. Ovechkin was suspended after video clearly showed that Ovi left his feet on a hit on Pittsburgh Penguin Zbynek Michalek Sunday afternoon. While Ovechkin is a repeat offender of this type of hit, suspension seemed inevitable.
So what does an iconic NHL player do to respond to his suspension. Well, in Alex’s case he decided to opt out of the All Star Game this weekend. That a boy. Ovechkin is known for his skating ability and magical stick work, so yeah, no one was looking forward to seeing him. (Sarcasm). Ovi made the following statement:
“My heart is not there. I am suspended, so why I have to go there?” “I love the game. It is a great event. I love to be there. I am suspended. I don’t want to be a target. I feel like I’m not deserving to be there right now because I am suspended.”
It will be interesting to see what other NHL players think about Ovi’s absence this weekend. Did Thomas and Ovechkin make the right decision, or will their choices come back to haunt them? Only time will tell.
