The off-season signing of Brian Boucher by Carolina pretty much sealed Justin Peters’ fate in Hurricanes’ training camp this year. After spending last season in the NHL as a back-up to Cam Ward, Peters was likely disappointed to end up in the AHL at the start of this season. Looking at Peters or talking to him, however, you never would have known. He reported to the Checkers’ camp in Charlotte with a positive attitude and has quietly gone about his job, teaming with Mike Murphy to become one of the AHL’s top goaltending tandems, allowing a combined average of just 2.49 goals per game.
Peters was rewarded for his outstanding work today when he was named the AHL’s Goaltender of the Month. Posting a 5-1-1 record in November with a 1.63 goals-against average and a 0.949 save percentage, Peters has helped the Checkers to a seven point lead in their division.
Not seeing many minutes in the NHL last year behind the workhorse Cam Ward, Peters is thriving seeing regular playing time in Charlotte. He now sits tied for sixth in the league with a 2.17 goals-against average and is third with a 0.932 save percentage.
Peters is of course quick to credit his teammates for his success this year. Take a look at Paul Branecky’s article here on the play of Peters this season for some excellent quotes from Justin and from Checkers’ head coach Jeff Daniels.
You can catch Peters in action next on Saturday night (7pm EST) at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte. For those unable to make it to Charlotte, the game will be televised on Time Warner digital cable channel 520 throughout the Carolinas. If you are going to be at the Hurricanes game that evening, don’t forget to set your DVR for the Checkers game!
Congratulations to Justin on such a tremendous honor. Keep working hard and continue to make Caniac Nation proud!
