Maurice Out, Muller in as Canes Try to Turn Things Around

Unless you live under a rock, or have been stuck in a really long meeting, you have heard by now that the Hurricanes have dismissed Head Coach Paul Maurice and have hired, Kirk Muller as his replacement. Muller was most recently the head coach of the Milwaukee Admirals, the AHL affiliate of the Nashville Predators, a position he accepted this past June. Prior to that he served a stint as an assistant coach with the Montreal Canadiens. Muller is a former NHL player and was part of the 1993 Canadiens Stanley Cup Championship team.

Aha! It’s all making sense now isn’t it? Caniac Nation knew that Jim Rutherford, Rod Brind’Amour and company were down in Charlotte last weekend as the Admirals took on the Charlotte Checkers but no one knew why. No one that is but our very own Renee Kalicicki!

She has not yet revealed her sources, but she was Johnny (Jenny?) on the spot with this one.

@peacelovepuck: Interesting hearing rumors of Kirk Muller coaching Canes. He is coach of the Milwaukee Ads who were in CLT this wknd. As were JR & Brindy.

@peacelovepuck: Not sure if there’s any substance to Muller rumors or if they just started because of JR and Brindy being in CLT.

There’s lots more news to come and the Hurricanes will be holding a press conference this afternoon at 5pm. Until then here are some links to some stories about our new man in charge.

This article tries to show ties to Carolina, but it was not what I expected. But Muller and some of the Hurricanes players and management are not strangers.

I really liked this story from Puck Daddy. I will say that I am cautiously optimistic about the hiring, and this made me feel more comfortable and excited for the future.

Here is the official story from the Hurricanes on the hire.

Chip Alexander from the News and Observer of course weighed in on Canes Now. Of note in this story is Jim Rutherford said we are looking to trade a forward for a defenseman but haven’t found anyone to meet our needs. I feel like something’s coming. I know it is.

Some Habs players gave soundbites on their former assistant coach. Nothing much of substance, but we now know they called the coach “Kirky.”

Here is the article that went out when the Admirals hired Muller over the summer. I am encouraged by this in the first line, “Kirk Muller appears to be a surefire future NHL coach…”

We will have more news for you after the press conference at 5pm. Coverage will be provided on the official Carolina Hurricanes website.  Head over there for our new coach’s biography.

And for goodness sakes, check us out on Facebook at Cardiac Cane and follow us on Twitter! Maybe @peacelovepuck will work her Twitter mojo again. You never know! Cardiac Cane writers:  @CardiacCaneFS@Esbee92@caniac176, and @peacelovepuck.
