Cue the music and pour a cold drink…it is Canes’ captain Eric Staal’s birthday! Mr. Staal was born in Thunder Bay, ON and turns a young 27 years old on this 29th of October. #12 was drafted by Carolina in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, only behind Marc-Andre Fleury, and has attained a fruitful career in Raleigh. Last season he led the Canes with 33 goals, 43 assists. The total of 76 points put him 11th in the league for scoring and 12th for goals. Staal boasts two franchise records with the Hurricanes with the most hat tricks in a single season (4) and the most post season points (43).

In addition to winning the Stanley Cup in 2006, the center won Olympic gold in 2010. He also acquired gold and silver for his performance with Team Canada in the 2007 and 2008 IIHF World Championships. Staal is an All-Star guru having participated in the 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2011 games. He was the 2007-08 All-Star game MVP as well.

The talented forward is husband to Tanya and father to three year old son, Parker. They will welcome a new addition to the family in December with baby number two. Of course, you can’t mention the Staal family without acknowledging some other talented athletes. Brothers Marc (NYR), Jordan (PHI), and Jared (CAR) are also living the NHL dream. Jared actually plays with the Canes’ AHL affiliate, Charlotte Checkers.

Eric Staal has worked his way through a rookie season to alternate captain to the big cheese. He is currently being criticized by some for a slow start to the 2011-12 season, however, I am a Staal supporter. I believe he is dedicated to his team and he shows intelligence on the ice (even his greasy goals). Plus, he has such a huge mouth with comes in handy when he  is shouting encouragements (or chirps) and directions (or demands) at practice for all to hear. It’s a big bonus.

The gifts are wrapped and ready to be opened. As always with Icing on the Cake, I wish I could magically make these offerings truly appear, but it is the thought that counts. Here are Staalsy’s fictitious gifts:

  • We know #12 is passionate about Eric’s Entourage, so I would like to bestow scholarships to every one of his little buddies so they can afford a fantastic education and the ability to play hockey.
  • With my magic Cardiac Cane wand, I bequeath him with magic feet. No, not for skating. With a click of his heels, the most mouth-watering Chinese food will appear hot and fresh.
  • Similar to the Adam Sandler movie, I grant Staal a remote control so he can go back and re-experience his favorite memories, including Game 7 of 2009 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.
  • He may also use the remote to pause the season and travel to the British Virgin Island with friends and family.

Caniacs wish you a blessed year full of success, health, and happiness. Stayed tuned to @CardiacCaneFS on Twitter today for some of my favorite Staal highlights! Let’s Go Canes!

Icing the Cake will return on Halloween for Charlotte Checkers’ alternate captain, Chris Durno.
