#3: An Unlucky Number for Canes

Forget thirteen holding the title as the most unlucky number. For the Carolina Hurricanes, the number three is proving the demon. Canes have been victorious in one preseason game, a shutout by Cam Ward. The other THREE games were losses given up in the THIRD period.

Here’s a little reminder…

  • September 19th: Canes fall THREE-1 to Buffalo. All three goals were given up in the THIRD period.
  • September 28th: Canes fall to the Jets THREE-1 and gave up THREE goals in the final round.
  • September 30th: Columbus Blue Jackets win after scoring two goals in the THIRD to win THREE-2.

All curses have a beginning, and I believe this #3 jinx was born April 9th. Caniacs cannot forget the last game of the 2010-11 season against Tampa Bay. Carolina’s playoff hopes rested on that one game. Canes gave up two goals in the THIRD and lost the contest. We have lost the contest regardless in the 6-2 loss, but one can’t help but see the pattern.

The Canes play Nashville Saturday night and we can only pray the curse is broken before the regular season kicks off October 7th against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
