Life is Beauty...

RIP Brad McCrimmon (Photo: Glenn Cratty/Getty Images)

The summer of 2011 was haunted by the passing of Wade Belak, Derek Boogard, and Rick Rypien. Their unexpected deaths sent a shockwave of surprise and grief throughout the hockey world. With preseason so quickly approaching, one would have assumed the tragedies would have ended. It certainly would have been more than enough.

News broke Wednesday morning from Russia that again brought the hockey family to their knees. At least 43 people belonging to team Lokomotiv of the KHL were killed in a plane crash.

“We have no team anymore,” Vladimir N. Malkov, the team spokesman, said in a telephone interview with The New York Times. “All our starting players, and all the service people, they all burned in the crash.”

Yes, former Canes players Josef Vasicek and Brad McCrimmonare among the deceased, however, a flight attendant or a former NHL star make no difference, everyone aboard that plane was a person denied the opportunity to say goodbye to their loved ones and for that we are truly sorry.

Everyone at Cardiac Cane and the FanSided Sports Network would like to show their sympathy by taking a moment of silence on Twitter at 9:00 a.m. EST Friday. We will post #KHLMomentofSilence at exactly 9am on Twitter and follow it with 60 seconds of silence and prayer. You are most welcome to join our family in this tribute.

Because I am lacking the words, here are a few from those who say it best…

“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” — Dr. Seuss

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” — Maya Angelou

“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends. To appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Life is an opportunity, benefit from it. Life is beauty, admire it. Life is a dream, realize it. Life is a challenge, meet it. Life is a duty, complete it. Life is a game, play it. Life is a promise, fulfill it. Life is sorrow, overcome it. Life is a song, sing it. Life is a struggle, accept it. Life is a tragedy, confront it. Life is an adventure, dare it. Life is luck, make it. Life is too precious, do not destroy it. Life is life, fight for it.” — Mother Teresa
