Locks of Love. Shave for St. Baldricks. Walk for a Cure. Beauty for Bug?
Zach Bennett is a hockey household name thanks to ESPN’s coverage of the Charlotte Checkers’ biggest fan. Zach, affectionately known as Bug, is fighting a rare genetic disorder in which tumors grow on his nerves called a neurofibromatosis 1. If you have been living underneath a rock, you can catch up with Bug’s story by watching this E:60 video. (I must mention the Checkers management and team for their dedication. Show your love fans and fill those seats this season.)
The Charlotte Checkers have been a source of support for Zach and his family. Although, I’m sure any of the guys would tell you Bug is actually their source of inspiration. One athlete in particular has developed a close relationship with the 11-year-old. Goalie Mike Murphy stays in contact with the family even during off-season via Skype. However, his recent dedication to his pal is one all athletes should take note.
While other NHL’ers are in the media for less than glamorous reasons (cough, Avery, cough), Murphy demonstrates true class. The 22-year-old netminder recently tweeted his 2011 season mask and it is a beauty. EYECANDYAIR by Steve Nash provided a breathtaking mask that depicts a very cool tribute to the one and only Bug Bennett.
On behalf of all Canes and Checkers fans, we are so proud to call Michael Murphy one of our own. I would like to thank the Bennett family as well. Sharing your story with us and seeing Bug’s smile at the games is as cherished a come-from-behind playoff victory. Thank you.
