It is a big day for Charlotte winger Jared John Staal. The Thunder Bay, ONT native turns 21 years old today. Staal is a household hockey name and Carolina is blessed to have brothers Eric and Jared. Younger Staal was drafted by Phoenix in 2008 (2nd Round, 49th Overall) and made his professional debut with the San Antonio Rampage on March 21, 2009.
His first pro point was an assist against Houston on April 8th, and his initial goal came with the Florida Everblades on November 24, 2010. Staal also played in the OHL for the Sudbury Wolves that season. He performed in 67 contests and claimed 19 goals and 33 assists. In the previous season, the forward earned 21 goals and 28 helpers for the Wolves.
On May 14, 2010, the Hurricanes acquired J. Staal from the Coyotes and signed him to a 3-year entry level contract. The birthday boy spent the 2010-11 season spilt between the Everblades (ECHL) and Charlotte Checkers (AHL). In 33 games with the Blades, he scored 6 goals and 5 assists. He had the opportunity to play in 13 contests with the Checkers and snagged a goal and assist.
The Canes Family wishes Jared a very blessed birthday and a successful season. If I could grant him one gift, it would be to wake up with no hangover after celebrating his big 2-1. Now enjoy the below videos from Jared’s draft footage and my favorite Staal Family flick.
