As a fan of a hockey club that starts their games by sounding a siren warning of an impending natural disaster, you would think I would be used to turbulent conditions by now. But today has been has been crazy in the hockey world, and the staff of Cardiac Cane has spent most of the day trying to keep up. In laymen’s terms, that means we were in our respective corners rocking in the fetal position until the storm passed.
Still personally still reeling from the news of Erik Cole’s departure, I wasn’t expecting any announcements today except for the AHL conference realignment and possibly news on defenseman Derek Joslin. While I blinked, the Hurricanes signed defenseman Tomas Kaberle of the Boston Bruins to a 3-year $12.75 contract. That’s right. I said Tomas Kaberle. Nope. Didn’t see that one coming.
Kaberle is coming off a stint with the B’s after playing the first part of the 2010-2011 season with the Maple Leafs. Wait didn’t we have a Kaberle before? Why yes we did. That would be older brother František “Frank” Kaberle, a member of the 2006 Stanley Cup Championship squad who has been lending his defensive skills to the HC Pardubice team in the Czech Republic.
I know what you’re thinking. (Honestly. I do.) “Wow. What are we going to do with all these blueliners?” Don’t worry. We have room now because Joe Corvo is headed to Beantown. Corvo is what? That’s right. Over the weekend Corvo apparently made a “soft request” to GM Jim Rutherford for a trade. I am not sure what all that entails, but I like to think it included a “pretty please with sugar on top” in addition to a 4th round draft pick.
We haven’t just picked up D-men in the past few days. Center Tim Brent was recently acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs where he played last season with…you guessed it! Tomas Kaberle!
I know I am leaving out more player connections and facts about which guys were previously coached by Mo. But this is starting to feel like hockey musical chairs, or a bad country song. So while you crank up some Scorpions and think about what Kaberle can bring to the PK and how Tim Brent is going to fit right in with the boys, I’ll just be huddled in the bathtub under a mattress until the all clear is sounded.
