Matsumoto Joins Playoff Magic

Game 1 against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins had a familiar beginning. Hot Zac Dalpe captured his fourth goal of the playoffs to put the Checkers on the board at 15:10 in the first. Brett Sutter initiated the sequence while Boychuk made the scoring pass.

Dalpe also scored the first goal in Game 1 and 2 during the Hershey Bear series.

However, the rest of the contest was not as familiar. The following two Charlotte goals were created on power play opportunities. A nice change of pace considering Charlotte went 4-for-33 in the previous six games.

The two pucks that slipped past Brad Thiessen were from the stick of Jon Matsumoto. Matsumoto had 20 goals in 65 regular season games. Thursday’s goals were his first in the Calder Cup race.

Geoff Walker tied the game for Wilkes-Barre early in the second and Brett Sterling scored at 6:26 in the third. Both were also extra-man goals.

Mike Murphy helped keep the Penguins at bay to win 3-2. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the young netminder continues to zone in on the puck to make game-changing saves. Murphy made 28 stops

WBS defense was notable as they kept Charlotte to 19 SOG.

These hard matched teams face-off again on Saturday. Cardiac Cane will be unavailable to tweet and recap the game as I will be spending a technology-free weekend camping in the wilderness. Thankfully, I will return to technology and to the Checkers on Monday at the TWC Arena.
