Throwdown Thursday: Hurricanes in for Habs

Six teams continue the quest for the Stanley Cup Thursday night. Western Conference teams Blackhawks and Canucks face-off in game four while the Sharks and Kings tackle game three. Vancouver leads their series 3-1 and San Jose is up 2-1 in their first play-off round.

The Bruins and Canadiensrepresent the Eastern Conference tonight. Currently, the Habs lead the series 2-1. So how would the Hurricanes measure up against each of these teams had they made the play-offs?  That friggin stung to write by the way.

Since I took the Habs in the series, let’s look at how Carolina would measure up against the Boston Bruins in game four. During the 2010-11 season, Canes won only one of their four contests with the Bruins. One loss included a 0-7 shutout in Boston in mid-January. Ouch. Perhaps the slaughter was payback for the 3-0 Cam Ward shutout on November 26, 2010. It was Ward’s only win in the four games.

Zdeno Chara seriously cramped the Canes’ style with three goals and three assists. Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci also managed three points in the season series with Carolina.

Although the Canes were unable to produce a Chara-type producer durng the games, several Hurricanes players contributed. Joe Corvo, Tuomu Ruutu, and Jeff Skinner each had a goal and two helpers. Jussi Jokinen grabbed two goals while Staal and Cole each earned two assists.

Thirty-goal scorer Milan Lucic hasn’t found his way to the back of the net as of yet.

While the Hurricanes struggled with their extra-man goals, Boston has gone 0-for-11 in three games.

Mark Recchi and Bergeron together have produced one goal and five assists. Chara has managed just a single assist in the trio of games.

A look into the past, a recap of the present…so how would the Canes fair in the fourth upcoming game against the Bruins? Just a glimpse into the past made me cringe and reach for the white flag. However, considering a couple of Boston’s current woes, for example Tomas Kaberle, I am confident the Carolina Hurricanes would walk away with a fat ‘W’ in this pairing. The final games executed by the Canes were played by a team that would have beat the Bruins.
