A Watched Pot Never Boils

They say a watched pot never boils. Although it is just an old wives tale, it does feel like a million lifetimes as you glare into still water upon your stove.

Watching hockey last night reminded me of watching a pot of motionless hot water. Despite a big win against Ottawa on Tuesday, the Canes cannot seem to trek forward in the playoff race.

It was an exciting come from behind win for the Carolina hockey team last night. They rallied from a 0-2 deficit thanks to Chad LaRose’s two goals. The other pair of net penetrators were courtesy of Tuomo Ruutu and Cory Stillman.

Cam Ward was the third star of the game with no surprise, although, not to be taken for granted. Ward swallowed pucks like Takeru Kobayaski during a hot dog eating contest. The Canes’ goalie made 36 saves.

However, victories were also claimed by the Buffalo Sabres and NY Rangers. The watched pot refuses to boil. The Canes began the night three points behind the Sabres, and they ended the night trailing three points from 8th seed Buffalo.

Beating Ottawa certainly isn’t a bad thing. Caniacs were thrilled for the W. It just seems Canes put their right skate in the playoff rankings, then take their right skate out, they do the hockey pokey and turn themselves right back around.

One becomes bored of the scenery running idle on a treadmill. Let’s hope the Hurricanes final nine games of the regular season provide that change of scenery in the playoff standings. The team will have a chance to get the race moving on Friday as they face the Tampa Bay Lightning in Florida. The duo face off again the following night in Raleigh.
