Final Four: Hurricanes Host Senators

The Ottawa Senators skate against the Carolina Hurricanes for the fourth and final contest this season. The Senators have current dibs on the last place in the Eastern Conference. Hey, someone has to be last.

Despite the discouraging position (that’s what she said), the Senators defeated the 5th seed Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday in overtime, 3-2. The Canes play a back-to-back with the Lightning this weekend. The festivities begin with an away game in Tampa on Friday, and finishes Saturday in the loudest house in the NHL. We have faced #5 spot Tampa Bay twice this year and the results have been evenly split.

The last contest with the Senators was December 29, 2010. Cam Ward claimed a shutout in the 4-0 home game. Zach Boychuk also had an impressive night with two goals barely four minutes apart in the first. Patrick Dwyer also had a stellar night with a goal and an assist.

Canes only fell to Ottawa once this season (2-3) in October on Senator turf.

As Ottawa is coming off a big victory to Tampa, the Canes are coming off a mediocre weekend. Although they beat the New York Islanders on Saturday, the loss to the Maple Leafs on Friday left a mark.

The Carolina team has to find a way to apply pressure to the big dogs. They can’t be skating before their net for 60 minutes. It can’t be the Cam Ward Show every game. However, if the Canes continue to play as they did on Saturday our playoffs chances would greatly improve as other players stepped up.

More pre-game goodness coming tomorrow…until then…Let’s Go Canes!
