Caniac Nation can sleep soundly tonight thanks to Cam Ward’s superb shutout. A performance of that magnitude deserves a victory song, and The White Stripes single, Seven Nation Army, boasts the perfect lyrics for the Carolina goalie:
I’m gonna fight ‘em all
A nation army couldn’t hold me back
They’re gonna rip it off
Taking their time right behind my back
And if I catch it coming back my way
I’m gonna serve it to you
And that ain’t what you want to hear
But that’s what I’ll do
The game would have ended completely different without the impressive 22 stops made by Cam in the first. His superhuman skills remained invisible even after 60 minutes. Ward made a total of 40 saves in the 1-0 shutout against the Buffalo Sabres.
“I thought I was seeing the puck really well,” Ward told reporters after the game. “For the most part, I was really happy with the way I controlled the rebounds.”
The reliable goalie did admit the challenge isn’t over, “We”ll have to be just as good tomorrow.”
But for now, this win is as satisfying as unbuttoning your pants after a china buffet. The victory puts the Canes within two points of 8th seed Buffalo.
Brandon Sutter made the lone goal of the evening, his first in 17 games. Mike Sundheim, Director of Media Relations for the Canes, provided an interesting fact via Twitter after the game, “Carolina has not lost in regulation this season when Brandon Sutter scores (10-0-1).”
The victorious Hurricanes fly home to face the Maple Leafs tomorrow evening at the RBC Center. Until tomorrow’s preview, sweet dreams Caniacs!
