Cardiac Cane would like to put the spotlight on our boys to the west. We root for them, we support them, so let’s officially make the Charlotte Checkers part of the crazy Cardiac Cane family.
Shall we start with a history lesson, kiddos?
The Charlotte Checkers, previously known as the Albany River Rats, were bought by Michael Kahn of MAK Hockey, LLC. Mr. Kahn relocated the franchise to Charlotte under the Checkers’ brand. Thank the Lord for the renaming. I can’t think of Rats without picturing the rat-tail hair trend of the late 80’s, and rat-tails give me the willies.
Under the Eastern Conference, the Charlotte Checkers hosted their first home game at the Time Warner Cable Arena to a record-breaking crowd on October 15, 2010.
Their mascot is the oldest in the city and his name is Chubby. Although the name doesn’t give me the willies, it does give me the giggles.
Currently, the Checkers sit fourth in the East Division with 80 points. They are just one point behind the Norfolk Admirals.
Charlotte is coming off a tough 3-1 loss to the Binghampton Senators on Saturday. However, OSU alum Zac Dalpe has points in two straight games. Chris Terry (26) and Jacob Micflikier (25) are both top twenty leaders in the AHL.
The Canes affiliate also collected over $17,800 Saturday night in jersey auctions for Carolina Breast Friends.
