Hurricanes vs Devils, Part 1/3

The first of three match-ups between the Canes and Devils took place last night in Newark. These two teams might as well cuddle up with a cup of hot coco and matching PJ’s as they are going to be spending a few nights together over the next twelve days.

Cam Ward provided two saves against Tallinder and Zajac in the first period and the Canes out-shot the Devils 9-8, but the score remained 0-0 after the first.

The second period launched a productive evening for the rookies. Jeff Skinner scored his 19th goal of the season on Hedberg (assists Corvo & Pitkanen) and his 20th in the third (assists Staal & White). The 5’11” center also scored two goals against Jersey on New Year’s Day.

However, it was the Devils’ rookies that came out on top. Nick Palmieri slid one past Cam Ward with 2:54 to play in the third. It was Mattias Tedenby’s second goal of the night that won the game in overtime. The Devils continue their hot streak with a 3-2 win over the Hurricanes. Although, thanks to Skinner, the Canes gained a point ahead of Atlanta in the Eastern Conference standings.

“We didn’t play a sharp game tonight. The puck was bouncing everywhere,” Skinner admits. Canes hope for a smoother showdown on Thursday night against the Flyers.

Anton Volchenkov of the Devils earned himself a three game suspension for elbowing Zach Boychuk. “Trainer Dougie put me through the concussion test. Had to remember words, numbers, and the months of the year backwards. No problem at all,” Boychuk said via Twitter last night.
