Carson recalled, Pitkanen injured

Defenseman Joni Pitkanen may not join his fellow Canes Thursday night against the Philly Flyers. Pitkanen sustained an injury in the third period during yesterday’s game against the Devils. He apparently took a hit to the leg by Anssi Salmela, but the injury does not appear to be serious. General Manager, Jim Rutherford, expects him back in action for this weekend’s games with Tampa (Sat.) and Atlanta (Sun.). Pitkanen had a more somber upper body injury earlier this year that caused him to miss five games.

As a result, Brett Carson was recalled from the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL Wednesday night. The 6’4”, 210 pound defenseman was drafted fourth round, 109th overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Carson has played seven NHL games in the 2010-11 season and is being recalled on an emergency basis.

Aside from the slight injury, free agent gossip swirls about Pitkanen. The new, proud papa has been with the Canes for nearly three years, but will be a unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. His wife gave birth to a baby boy on January 8th. Pitkanen told the News & Observer he would like to stay in Raleigh, “It’s a great organization, great fans, and great people here. Absolutely I would like to stay here.”
