Ok I know it seems like I am picking on the Washington Capitals, but truthfully I am just pointing out the points. I promise this is my last blog on the Capitals this season, but seeing this team come to Raleigh three times a year I have to give my opinion on the Caps future.
The Washington Capitals did exit interviews with the media yesterday and of course Alex Ovechkin was there and did like a team captain should have and took the blame, not all deserved. Niklas Backstrom in my opinion will be a top leader on the Caps for years to come as he also blamed himself. However, the two biggest absences during the playoff series against the Canadians, Alex Semin and Mike Green, skipped out on the media taking no responsibility for the teams playoff series loss.
Raise your hand now if you saw Alex Semin play hockey against the Canadians because I didn’t. Yes Semin is a great regular season player when he stays healthy, but he sure did not show up and is become a player who looks like he more interested in picking up the check than the Stanley Cup. When comparing the two Alex’s you will see that Alex Ovechkin tries his hardest and will leave everything on the ice. Ovechkin immediately started to learn English when drafted, while Semin drafted two years prior is still using a Russian translator. I just don’t see the motivation from Semin, if they can get him motivated the Caps have a much better chance next year.
The other player to discuss is Mike Green. Mike Green was more noticeable in his GEICO commercial than playing until game 7 of the series against the Canadians. When Green was noticeable in game 7 it was only for bad reason’s that directly or indirectly led to both goals including a dumb penalty that led the first goal. Mike Green earlier in the week was named a Norris Trophy candidate, even with the lack of defense and essentially off of his point production. After everything that happened, he had a chance to defend him self and just ducks the media. At this point Green may only be a regular season player and he showed why he was not a team Canada selection.
This off-season if I am George McFee I try to move a play like Alex Semin in order to get a big tough defenseman or top level goalie because until they have these, especially the defenseman, top players on the back end the Washington Capitals will be San Jose east.
