Hurricanes Look To Avoid Losing Streak Tonight, Carolina vs. Washington Preview

NHL 2008 - Hurricanes Beat Capitals 3-1

Provided by Yardbarker.com

Well we have reached single digits in games remaining and the Hurricanes are pretty much out of the playoff picture.  Tonight they will look for a mini accomplishment against the Washington Capitals.  If the Hurricanes win tonight in regulation they will have won the season series with the top two team in the Eastern Conference.  Even though it is not as good as making the playoffs, its quite an accomplishment for any team to say you beat Pittsburgh 3 games out of 4 and split with the Washington Capitals while taking more points.  The Hurricanes are the only Southeast Division team with a chance to win the season series with the Capitals.

The Washington Capitals are the class of the league this season.  They are lead by their Captain Alex Ovechkin, the two time league MVP, has 45 goals and 98 points.  He is in a three horse race with Sidney Crosby and Steven Stamkos for the Rocket Richard trophey with 9 games remaining.  However, the Capitals have proven they are not just the Ovechkin show, Nicholas Backstrom and Alexander Semin also have had great season along with Jose Theodore.  The Capitals are coming off a very emotional shootout victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins last night while the Hurricanes have been resting.  However, when you have a high power offense like Washington they always have a chance to win.  Tonight will be the second homecoming for Corvo and Walker.  In the last game Corvo scored two goals for the Capitals in the 4-3 OT loss to the Hurricanes.  The Capitals have already wrapped up the Eastern Conference and the Presidents trophy in all likely hood and are preparing for the playoffs.  Tonight should be interesting to watch considering they play Pittsburgh last night.

The Hurricanes auditions for next season continue tonight as Drayson Bowman has been recalled for the 2nd time this season.  Bowman will start on a line tonight with Jokinen and Dwyer.  The Hurricanes continue to audition young talent for next season.  The Hurricanes are looking to avoid their 3rd loss in a row tonight.  The Hurricanes are coming of a 3-2 loss in overtime against the Tampa Bay Lightning.  The Hurricanes have now gone to OT in 3 out of their last 4 games with the only loss coming to Tampa.  The Hurricanes look to take the season series from the Capitals tonight with a regulation win.  “We just have to try and do what we’ve done so well for a long time and put this loss behind us,” Carolina coach Paul Maurice said.  If the Hurricanes are to win tonight they will have to play a sound defensive game.  They also need to do what Washington does and push the puck and take chances.  The major factor will be if the Hurricanes can stay out of the box.  If they can do so they stand a good chance of winning tonight.
