Hurricanes Finish Road Trip Tonight

Raleigh –  The Hurricanes will finish a four game tonight as they finish their season series with the Islanders.  The Hurricanes are coming off a great back in forth game that saw Jussi Jokinen slap a shot past Miller with under four minutes to go to win 4-3.  It would be nice to see the Hurricanes get a win tonight because the Hurricanes will have their last three games at home before the break.  Granted Whitney, Cullen, A. Ward, Walker, Yelle, and Corvo could be gone soon it we be great for the fans to have an up beat feeling going into the Olympic break.

The interesting question about tonight is with the season lost does Justin Peter, 2004 second round pick 38th overall, see his first NHL action tonight or do the Hurricanes come back with Legace on back to back nights.  My gut tells me it will once again be Manny Legace who has only played one full game since December 23rd and it was last night against Buffalo.  Manny didn’t play great, but that can be expected after being on the shelf for so long.  Either way we are likely to see Justin Peters towards the end of the season to see what he has and for the Hurricanes to decide on the backup roll for next year.  The Hurricanes continue to play with no pressure and Eric Staal is absolutely on fire.  When asked by John Foreslund, TV play by play announcer, Staal says the difference between now and earlier this season is simply health.  With the added Captaincy to his game Staal has been nearly unstoppable.  The other question is the Nicklas Wallin situation.  Will Wallin get back into the lineup tonight or will he once again be scratched, pretty much forcing him to waive his no trade clause.  I tend to be a loyal person and if Wallin wants to stay in Carolina he should be allowed to after all he has done for the franchise.

With all this being said the Hurricanes need to keep the Islanders down tonight as the Islanders are struggling to win right now.  The Islanders have lost six games in a row and are fading fast from the playoff picture.  “It has snowballed,” coach Scott Gordon said. “Very rarely do you have your whole team go cold. It’s hard to believe that we’re not scoring on some of those chances and it’s been consistent that we haven’t.”  The Islanders have been without their superstar and last years 1st overall pick John Tavaras has only had one goal since December 26th and no power play goals in his last 26 games.  The Islanders are coming off a game where they had a brief 2-1 lead before going 0-4 on the power play and leading to another loss.  Islanders defensemen was quoted after the game as saying “We’ve got to push it during these games before the (Olympic) break. We’ve got to amass some points, because we’ve got some ground to make up.”
