Well I am back after being out of town for the weekend and so much has happened since then. The biggest news came yesterday when the team put Aaron Ward on waivers hoping to clear some salary. Most likely Aaron Ward will clear waivers and has a better chance of being picked up on re-entry waivers. Also we will learn the fait of Michael Leighton today as he will either be picked up or clear re-entry waivers today at noon.
The Hurricanes had a good road trip this week considering how tough the schedule. The Hurricanes finally got their first road win against one of the leagues top teams the Pittsburgh Penguins. The big news for the game was the lack of Rod Brind’Amour. Brind’Amour was a healthy scratch against the Penguins and it seemed to energize the team in the 3-2 victory.
Then the Hurricanes would lose in a hard fought battle with the Devils during Cam Wards return, they Hurricanes were down 3-0 when quick goals by Brandon Sutter and Tuomo Ruutu made it 3-2. However, the Hurricanes would fail to score again even though they threw everything but the kitchen sink at Brodeur would lose 4-2.
The third game of the road trip I was lucky enough to see in person as the Hurricanes took on the Washington Capitals. The game matched the best and worst in the eastern conference, which did not figure to be much of a matchup. However, this was probably the best game in a while. Cam Ward stood on his head and gave the Hurricanes a chance to win. The Hurricanes were majorly outshot, but held a 2-0 lead on goals by Jiri Tlusty and Eric Staal heading to the second. Then Semin took over with two goals in the second with the last one coming with 0.6 seconds left in the middle frame. The third period would see the Capitals take a 3-2 lead in the third on a goal by Tomas Fleischmann. When the Hurricanes looked dead, Tim Gleason, who had to get 30 stiches after taking a puck in the face, skated in on a shorthanded and fired a bomb past Theodore to tie the game at 3. The Capitals would then score in Overtime as Mike Green fired one past Cam Ward for the 4-3 victory.
Finally the back end of a back to back saw the Hurricanes lose to the Senators. The Hurricanes and Senators would go back and fourth as Ottawa was able to get goals from Kovalev and Spezza, while the Hurricanes got both goals from Whitney. However, Joni Pitkanen would be called for a holding penalty with under five minutes and Kovalev scored to give the Senators the 3-2 lead before scoring an empty netter for the hat trick.
The Hurricanes will now regroup as 3 of their next four will be at home with the only road game being at Florida. The Hurricanes begin with a Western Conference opponent in the Dallas Stars.
