The streak continues for the Hurricanes, which now sits at five. The good news is the Hurricanes will not lose in the next four days, only because they will not play again till Vancouver on Saturday. The Hurricanes started well as they would break their scorless power play streak with a goal from Joe Corvo at 4:35 of the first period. However, the tide seemed to change when Carolina suffered its second freak skate accident of the season when Joe Corvo was cut on the back of the leg. The Hurricanes would never recover. Later in the first period Ovechkin would deliver a knee on knee hit to Tim Gleason. Ovechkin would receive a five minute major and a game misconduct. The Hurricanes were unable to score on the five minute penalty. Shortly after the power play the Capitals would score on a 2 on 1 to make it 2-1. The Capitals would add another goal at the end of the second period on a goal by Backstrom. The Hurricanes would get a goal to pull with in one late in the third period as Matt Cullen put the puck past Theodore to make it 3-2 Capitals win.
Now all Hurricanes fans are in waiting mode. Everyone is wondering what moves Rutherford will make this week. “It’s hard to accelerate [change] because you really can’t move contracts out,” said Rutherford. “If we could, we would probably move a handful of guys out today and move the younger guys in, even if they weren’t ready, and start that process. We will have to wait and see what changes are made, but be assured changes will be made.
Finally the Ovechkin hit. I have always said the Ovechkin is a dirty player and he once again proves it with his knee on knee hit to Tim Gleason. Ovechkin did receive a five minute major and a game misconduct. However, this is the second time this week Ovechkin has received these penalties, not to mention a slew foot on Rich Peverely earlier this month. Ovechkin has always pushed the envelope since being in the NHL. Almost every time he goes to make a hit on the boards he leaves his feet, which is charging. That being said I think the two game suspension is fitting for now. This will be Ovechkins first suspension and let’s hope he takes it to heart. If not the next suspension should be at least seven games to really drive the point home.
