Well where do I begin after a horrible weekend. The Hurricanes have accomplished what only one other team has in history giving up two five goal third periods in back to back nights. The Hurricanes blew a three goal lead on Friday allowing the Thrashers a five goal third period to lose 6-4. Then the very next night the Hurricanes gave up a 1-0 lead in the third to lose 5-1 to Buffalo. Personally it’s been a horrible weekend watching the Hurricanes get spanked twice and the Heels lose to arch rival NC State. That being said major changes will probably be coming after tonight’s game against the Washington Capitals. The question is what you would do if you were in Jim Rutherford’s position.
The two ways Jim Rutherford could go is trade the upcoming unrestricted free agents that are not a part of the long term plan, or he fires Maurice and try to make a miracle push for the playoffs. Below is a list of the upcoming unrestricted free agents. Earlier today Rutherford said he supports Maurice, which means the Hurricanes are likely heading down the first road. The hard part of the situation is how close to the cap the Hurricanes are. Some of these players may be here until the trade deadline. I personally think that you make a minor move now then wait till the deadline to get the most return to restock the franchise. If anything happens it will most likely happen either Tuesday or Wednesday. We will just have to wait and see where the team goes once the team makes the initial move.
Upcoming Free Agents:
Ray Whitney $3.550
Matt Cullen $2.800
Joe Corvo $2.750
Scott Walker $2.500
Stephan Yelle $550,000
Aaron Ward $2.500
Nic Wallin $1.725
With the Hurricanes losing four in a row the road does not get any easier tonight as they face the best in the east. This could be good for my fantasy team, but bad for the Hurricanes. Ovechkin is the one everyone thinks of when they think of Capitals hockey. However, they also have Backstrom and Semin. Honestly unless Leighton stands on his head tonight I do not see the Hurricanes coming out with a win tonight.
