Let me catch me breath after that one. I know it was a battle of the bottom two teams in the league, but it definitely was not a game for the faint of heart. The Hurricanes once again came out flat allowing three different goals by Stajan, Stempniak, and Garbovski. The Hurricanes may have lost a lot of games, but most of the time they keep working hard and tonight were finally rewarded. The Hurricanes were able to score the only two goals in the second period when Stephan Yelle put a puck that your grandmother could have scored into the net, followed by a great goal at a sharp angle by Matt Cullen. The third period started pretty even, but the Leafs would get a power play about seven minutes into the period. The Leafs would make the Canes pay when Alexi Ponikarosky cut around Corvo and deposited it past Legace to make it 4-2. Then it was Tim Gleason time, Gleason who had zero goals last years scored two goals in the final twelve minutes to tie it and seemed like we were headed for overtime. Then Ian White scored with 29.9 seconds emptying the building. However, with three seconds remain Erik Cole put one past Gustavasson to tie the game and the crowd that had not left the building came pouring back to their seats. In overtime there were no grade A chances so they headed to the shootout. In the shootout Ruutu and Jokinen both scored while Legace stopped the two he saw for his first win as a Hurricane.
The Hurricanes and Maple Leafs both played a sloppy game, but was the most entertaining game I have seen this year. The most important part is the Hurricanes have earned points in four straight games collecting a total of six out of a possible 8. The best part about the win is they did it despite all the injuries. The Canes could get back Eric Staal next week along with Joni Pitkanen and Scott Walker to help improve the team. This team seems to fight and I believe this is becoming their identity.
Now the Hurricanes will face a hot Tampa Bay Lightning team on Saturday night at home before going on the road to play the western conferences worst Anaheim Ducks. If the Hurricanes can put a little mini winning streak together they might could come out of this a be the team we all believed they would be
